Product description: Apsara is a female spirit of the clouds and waters married to the Gandharvas according to Hinduism, and Buddhist culture. In Cambodia, Apsara means a water nymph or celestial spirit, and is believed that they descend from the heavens to entertain gods and kings with their captivating dance and charm. Apsara dance is deeply rooted in Cambodian culture, and is referred to as the classical Cambodian ballet held in high esteem across the country. There are evidences of this form of Apsara dancing etched on the walls of the ancient temples of Cambodia which has become so iconic with Khmer culture. The main traits of the dance are the hand gestures, and “Jeeb”, a hand position that is defined by pressing the thumb and forefinger together and fanning the remaining fingers out carries many different meanings, like shyness, laughter, love and sorrow. The dance is practiced by girls from a young age to gain flexibility that is needed in their hands and feet to carry out the graceful and intricate moves, which make it look like the women are floating on clouds.Apsaras are identified by their elaborate costume, which is comprised of elegant silk clothing, stunning jeweled headdresses and precious necklaces, earrings, bracelets and anklets.

The bonze Apsara statue is portrayed in a dance pose with her left leg placed on a double lotus pedestal, and right leg raised and touching her left leg balancing her body to show the beautiful dance pose. Her right hand is raised and fingers are in jeeb position, while her left hand holds a lotus. The detailed crown and jewels worn by Apsara in a graceful dance pose make it a beautiful decor that matches any of your interior accessories. Apsara is traditional of Khmer culture and the statue highlights the fine workmanship by our artisans of Cambodia.
