Product description: This hand-carved statue from Bali shows Lord Vishnu, riding his divine Garuda, seated high on Garuda’s back. His face is youthful and smiling, and he looks completely at ease. One arm is raised behind his head holding the Sudarshana Chakra, his spinning discus, which is carved as a radiant openwork wheel. He wears the tall, tiered crown of Balinese Hindu iconography along with finely etched jewelry, armbands and necklaces, each carved with care. Below him, Garuda is shown in full fierce glory. He has a curved beak, bared fangs and wide, watchful eyes, and his body is covered in layered scale and feather patterns. His wings sweep upward and outward to form a dramatic fan-shaped halo behind both figures. The outer feathers end in rows of curling, pierced tips, the serpent deities with crowned heads rise on either side of the base, and a third serpent writhes at the center beneath Garuda’s feet. The base is an oval platform carved with rolling clouds and waves, adding a sense of upward movement to the whole piece. The natural, unpainted finish lets the depth of every cut show clearly. Certainly, a striking centerpiece for a home altar, meditation space, collector’s shelf or living room, and also makes a meaningful gift for devotees of Vishnu and admirers of hand carved art.
